STUDIO TRIP TO JOGJAKARTA, INDONESIA 2016

STUDIO TRIP TO JOGJAKARTA, INDONESIA 2016

Last 25 February 2016, we arrived to Adisucipto International Airport, Jogjakarta after two hours travels with Air Asia airplanes. The airport looks simple rather than KLIA 2, Malaysia. So, the plane need to park itself to a bay, then we can move out by a moveable staircase that were connected to the airplane. Then, we settle our immigration by the officer inside the airport terminals.

Pak Agus, an Indonesian aged 50’s greets us with a banner that wrote ‘welcome to student from USM to Jogjakarta’ on it. By then we were arranged to meet our bus driver and our travel bus. The bus is completely in perfect condition. We had a short tour while we are arranged to go to for a lunch in one of The Nasi Padang Sederhana Restaurant. From that tour, this was the my first time to be in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, I have seen many people in every single corner of the area of the town. Everyone is walking to do something, selling things by the sidewalks, musician plays music and some are with their vehicles. The traffic were not too heavy as I imagine that it will be just like in Penang, Malaysia. It is kind of many vehicles were on the roads, but I realized the bus can keep moving even sometimes we stuck in road for a couple of minutes. But, we are still moving, and it didn’t take too much times to move in the crowded city of Jogjakarta.

On our 1st day, after we had a ‘nasi padang’, we were introduced to Malioboro, a heaven for who love to shopping things. Malioboro is named of its road. It is looks like Masjid India Road, Kuala Lumpur. It full with people who sells their items even in the shop-houses, on the sideway or walkway, and even some of them walks while sell their things that were located in a box on their chest. Some of them that sells on the sideway makes the way looks crowded plus with the pedestrian walks on it. Along the two-ways of Malioboro roads, there are shop-houses on bothsides that majority sell clothes. There are trishaw services and ‘kereta kuda’ nearby the road. The road crowded with vehicles of motorcycle, car and van. There are also a shopping mall at between of the shop-houses. It is main attraction to tourist to spend their times in there to buy some souvineer.

Before night, we going to check-in to OGH Doni Hotel. Its located near to Empire XXI cinema and Starbuck Coffee House. The hotel ranks with three stars. We were serve with two single bedroom, for four of us in each room. So we need to share the beds together. The rooms occupied with a small toilet and shower, wardrobe and televisions.

On 2nd day in Jogjakarta, we were going to Umah UGM. Its is a place that located in somewhere centered of the houses. We had to walk from the bus to the Umah UGM about a quarter of hours along the small corridor between each of the houses there. The corridor is enough with us to move, and sometimes there are motorcycle that use the same way. We have to give ways to them to move. Along the ways, there are many murals on the walls, many of Indonesian traditional craved art on the wall and some of Indonesian sells groceries by the window or doors.

We need to do task, by study the area around the Umah UGM. So, we need to do some sketches, find informations, and analysed their surrounding. Along with new friends from Universiti Gadjah Mada, Jogjakarta, Indonesia, we start to do our task around the town. So, I have to do sketches around the area. From the sketches, I founded that most of their architecture are built with timber. Then, we were told that most of their architecture comes from timber because of the timber resources are easy to get in there. Their architecture full with detail crafted, some are crafted looks dragons, snakes, flowers and crowns.

3rd day in Universiti Gadjah Mada, Jogjakarta, Indonesia. We need to present our research on yesterday. Our presentation runs smoothly even there are many things need to be learn and must do more research on it. Then, we got an opportunities to walks around the campus area. The universities looks like our 70’s or 80’s school in Malaysia, and most or the area were covered with greens. There is a lot of old trees around the campus, so the campus look cools. So, many of the student spend their time to study under the trees and pergolas.

After had a day at Universiti Gadjah Mada, we go to ‘Rumah Batik’, a place where they show the batik process from the beginning. The process area were located at the back of the houses, while at the house are the gallery for those who want to buy some of them. So, we need to walk, start from the beginning of the batik process and learn how to do batik by someone who demonstrate how the batik process, then at the last, we met the gallery. I realized that we cant skip move from the entrance to the gallery.

4th day, Borubudur Temple. After we check-in as international tourist, we were allowed to go inside the temple area. We need to walk about 15 – 20 minutes to reach the main gigantic Borubudur temple. After got a brief by Pak Agus, we are freely walk to Borubudur area to watch and learn the historical places. The Borubudur consist of many structure looks like ‘loceng’ / ring bells which it is a ‘candi’ that were constructed by huge black coloured brick stones . But some of the candi structure are broke, because of some of the people want to steal the monk statue that were placed inside the candi. All of it were arranged uniformly and align with the huge candi at the center of it. Nowadays, the candi still been conserve to its original forms. At the exit doors, there are a lot of people selling the souvineers to the tourists. They looks friendly and kindly looks to force us to buy their stuff, even they can decrease the price until it reach its minimum price.

5th day is for our recreational activity day. We were suppost to do water tubing at Oya River and discover Pindul Cave. It is a cave of limestone, which exactly can be found like in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. The recreational park is conserve by agent who serve some activities pakages to tourists. Most of them built a chalet around the area which include all the facilities to their tourist, there are also some small restaurant that been arranged by local villagers. The Oya River gives packages of water tubing, where we need to be follow the river flows around 8 kilometers to reach our destinations.

Then we goes to Prambanan Temple. It is a temple which arranged looks like a town. The temple consist to each every gods for example Brahma and others. The mighty has the biggest temples. The open area is filled with ground sand, and during that day, there were rainy and wet. But, the tourist still want to discover the places. Some of them takes picture and some of them are from local school that visit to the temples. There are some transportation services that required for the tourists, there are electrical trains and bicycles. I took the bicycles. So, we can cycle around the temple as they required a track for us. It took about 30 minutes to complete the circles, but we had a chance to cycle until for an hours.

On the last day, we visits Kraton (Palace of Yogyakarta), it’s a heritage building of Yogyakarta’s Sultan. Until nowadays, the Sultan still live in the palace and the visitors are allowed to take a tour inside of it. In the palace, we are giving a chance to walk around as a coordinator guided us. There are museum inside of it, and shows all the historical item belonging to the Sultan. There are palace guard that always monitor the environment. Before we leave, we get a chance to heard a traditional palace local song. It was sang at the ‘Balairung’ which looks like a opened hall. There are a lot of crafted timber at all structure component of it, some of them were painted in gold colours.

Then we finally reaches Water Palace, in Jogjakarta. It is also a historical palace. The palace was made for a long time ago. They consist of Sultan’s rooms, halls, and most attractive place is the pools. The pools nowadays were conserve to keep it from dirties. Most of the building at the palace were constructed with a thick wall, and the doors height is about 5 to 6 feet to above. Its because of the Sultan want the visitor always bow their head and not to more than him. At the exit gate of the museum, there are a straits of local villages that sells ‘kain batik’, ‘wayang kulit’ and some shirt for us to have. There is no people sells at the sideway along the palace area.

We reach to Museum Benteng Vredeburg. A local museum that consist of historical articles about Jogjakarta in the early age of World War 2, 1941. It is a park that with a old building inside of it, then it was turn into a 3D perspective gallery which we can see the miniature of the historical scenes inside of a glass box. There are an opened area at the center of the museum area.
